Question
Download Solution PDFIdentify whether the following statements related to springs are true or false.
i) When two coil springs are in series, both the springs will carry equal load
ii) When two coil springs are connected in parallel, the stiffness of the composite spring is the sum of the stiffness of the two springs.
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)
Detailed Solution
Download Solution PDFConcept:
a) Series arrangement of coil springs:
- The load (W) carried by both springs is equal, Or in other words, The load carried by each spring will be the same.
- Stiffness of composite spring (Keq);
\({1\over K_{eq}}={1\over K_1}+{1\over K_2}\)
b) Parallel arrangement of coil springs:
- The load carried by each spring will be different.
- Stiffness of composite spring (Keq);
Keq = K1 + K2
Additional Information:
- Stiffness of spring is inversely proportional to the number of coils in the spring.
- When a spring cut into two equal parts its stiffness becomes double for every individual part.
- A spring is a mechanical device used to absorb and release energy.
Hence both statements are correct.
