Concept:
A shift register can be used for parallel-to-serial or serial-to-parallel conversion and to produce delay.
Shift registers hold the data in their memory which is moved or shifted to their required positions on each clock pulse.
The four kinds of shift registers are:
Serial In Serial Out (SISO): In this shift register, data is entered serially and out serially. N bit shift register produces n clock pulses delay to its input
Serial In Parallel Out (SIPO): This is used for serial to parallel conversion.
Parallel In Serial Out (PISO): This is used for parallel to serial conversion
Parallel In Parallel Out (PIPO): In this shift register, data is entered parallelly and out parallelly. The time required for conversion is very less in this case.
