Concept:

Benzene diazonium chloride on reaction with aniline in the presence of dilute hydrochloric acid gives the p-aminoazobenzene.

The reaction of benzene diazonium chloride and aniline occurs under basic conditions to form a compound. The coupling occurs between the terminal diazonium nitrogen of the benzene diazonium ion and the para-position of aniline.

The product, p-aminoazobenzene is a dye, yellow in color. The strongly coloured azo compounds are frequently used as dyes known as azo dyes. It is made from phenylamine (aniline) is known as ‘aniline yellow’.
