Where m is the mass of the object, g is the acceleration due to gravity which the object is experiencing and h is the height to which it is raised. The height h depends on what our reference point is. If an object is placed at a table, and the table is taken as the reference point then the gravitational potential energy which it experiences will be ‘0’ because the height is ‘0’. The reference point is known as ‘datum’.
