What is the Blue Economy?The blue economy refers to the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic development, improved livelihoods, and ocean ecosystem health. It includes traditional sectors like fisheries, aquaculture, maritime transport, coastal tourism, and shipbuilding, along with emerging areas such as marine biotechnology, ocean renewable energy, deep-sea mining, carbon sequestration, and marine robotics. The goal is to combine development with conservation in marine and coastal areas. |
India and Norway have a history of cooperation in maritime research and ocean management. In 2019, they set up a Joint Task Force on the Blue Economy to identify and work on specific areas of collaboration. These include promoting sustainable fishing, tackling marine pollution such as plastics, developing offshore wind and ocean energy, sharing aquaculture technologies, improving green port infrastructure, advancing marine biotech, and conducting joint research on ocean health and climate impacts.
India’s National Blue Economy PolicyIndia’s Blue Economy Policy aims to sustainably harness ocean resources for national development and people's well-being. It includes components such as marine fisheries, tourism, ocean trade, ports, logistics, marine governance, and research. A flagship initiative under this is the Deep Ocean Mission, which focuses on deep-sea exploration and mapping of ocean resources. |
