West Bengal Civil Services has released the revised WBCS Syllabus & scheme for 2025. The topics and exam pattern for prelims and mains is mentioned in the detailed syllabus. Candidates must go through the WBCS Syllabus to have a better understanding of the syllabus along with other important details like exam pattern, marking scheme, duration of the exam, and much more. You can attempt the exam either in English or Bengali. According to WBCS Syllabus & Exam Pattern 2025, the selection process is divided into three phases i.e. preliminary exam, main exam, and an interview. The final selection of the candidates is based on their performance in the main exam and personality test.

WBPSC WBCS Exam Pattern 2025
WBCS Exam Pattern comprises 3 different selection stages, Preliminary Exam, Main Exam, and Personality Test. Candidates need to qualify all the three stages in order to get selected in the WBCS Exam 2025
WBCS Prelims Exam Pattern 2025
The WBCS Preliminary Exam is a screening test conducted to shortlist the candidates for the main exam. The screening test is qualifying in nature. Only the mains exam and interview score will decide whether you are selected or not. It is the first stage of the WBCS Selection Process.
- The Preliminary exam now consists of two papers, both objective in nature, General Studies Paper-I & General Studies Paper-II. Each paper carries 200 marks and has 200 multiple-choice questions.
- The duration of WBCS Exam is 2 hours per paper and it is mandatory to appear for both papers. If a candidate misses any one, they will be disqualified.
- General Studies Paper-II is qualifying in nature. Candidates need at least 33% marks in it. The Preliminary exam is only a screening test. Marks scored here won’t be counted for the final merit list.

WBCS Syllabus for Prelims 2025
The WBCS Preliminary Examination is held across various centers spread throughout the districts of West Bengal. However, Darjeeling is a special case — only candidates belonging to the Scheduled Tribes of Darjeeling district are eligible to select Darjeeling as their exam center.

WBCS Mains Exam Pattern 2025
Based on the scores in the preliminary exam, applicants will be shortlisted for the mains exam. Only those candidates who qualify for the main exam will be eligible for the Personality Test.
- The WBCS Main exam is more descriptive and detailed than before. It consists of 10 papers in total. Two qualifying papers: Bengali/Nepali (Paper A) and English (Paper B). Eight papers (Paper I to Paper VIII) will be counted for merit. Each paper carries 250 marks (except Paper A and B, which carry 300 marks each).
- The duration will be 3 hours per paper. Plus, candidates applying for Group C and Group D services are not required to appear for Paper VII and VIII (Optional Subject Papers).

WBCS Mains Syllabus 2025
The WBCS Mains syllabus for 2025 consists of the Language Paper, English, General Studies, Arithmetic, Reasoning, the Constitution of India, the Indian Economy, and Optional Subjects. Candidates are eligible for the WBCS Mains exam based on their performance in the Prelims. The Mains exam will include six compulsory papers, along with one optional subject that will be assessed through two papers. Each of these papers will carry a total of 200 marks, and candidates will have 3 hours to complete each paper.

WBCS Interview 2025
For the interview, applicants will be chosen depending on their performance in the Main Exam. The rationale behind the Personality Test is to assess the aspirant’s general awareness, characteristics, traits, and suitability for the job. Candidates will receive marks as per the following scheme for the personality test:
