The UGC NET Eligibility is detailed in the official notification released by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The eligibility is defined in terms of the applicant's age, qualification, nationality, etc. The eligibility criteria for UGC NET JRF 2025 will be specified by the NTA in the official Information Bulletin for the June 2025 Session of the UGC NET Exam, tentatively in March, 2025. The following are the key eligibility requirements for NET JRF 2025 -
- The age of the candidates must be up to 30 years for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), while there is no age limit for the Assistant Professor post and PhD admissions.
- The applicants must have completed a Master's degree in relevant disciplines with at least 55% marks to be eligible for the UGC NET Exam.
- Applications of candidates who do not fulfill the UGC NET Eligibility will be disqualified.

The UGC NET Age Limit criteria must be met because they determine whether or not applicants can take the exam. Candidates must ensure they meet all conditions for UGC NET eligibility before submitting their application. UGC NET Age Limit for JRF
UGC NET JRF age limit is 30 years old. As mentioned below, age relaxation is granted to candidates who come within the reserved category by UGC NET Eligibility. According to Government of India regulations, age relaxation is available to specific categories. For candidates from the OBC, ST, SC, etc. categories, there would be a 5-year relaxation. Important Note for Candidates with Research Experience Seeking Age Relaxation
- Age relaxation of a maximum of 5 years will be provided to the candidates with research experience, limited to the period spent on research in the relevant/related subject of post-graduation degree, subject, only on production of a certificate from the appropriate authority, which should be a recognized Indian university / Institute of National Importance / foreign university which is duly approved/recognized/accredited in its own Country / Public Sector Undertaking of Government of India / State Government in India.
- The research should not have been carried out towards completion of graduation or post-graduation degree(s).

As per the UGC NET Eligibility, the candidate should be an Indian national to appear for the examination. She/he should have any of the following documents to prove her/his nationality:

UGC NET Subject-Wise Eligibility: Educational Qualification
Candidates who want to be selected for an Assistant Professor post in a particular subject should have a specific educational qualification to be eligible. Check out details of each subject educational qualification to be eligible for UGC NET examination.
- UGC NET Environmental Science Eligibility - Candidates who want to be selected as Assistant Professor for Environmental Science subject should have a Master’s degree in Environmental Science subject with at least 55% marks.
- UGC NET Eligibility for Physical Education - Candidates should have completed a Master of Physical Education (M.P.Ed.) with at least 55% marks.
- UGC NET Life Science Eligibility - Applicants should have a qualified Master’s in Life Science with at least 55% marks to be eligible for the Assistant Professor post through UGC NET.
- UGC NET Public Administration Eligibility - Candidates who want to be selected as Assistant Professor for Public Administration subject should have a Master’s degree in Public Administration subject with at least 55% marks.
- Eligibility for UGC NET Management - There is three management in UGC NET exam. Candidates should have passed Master of Financial Management (M.F.M.), Master of Marketing Management (M. Mkt. M.), or Master of Tourism Management (MTM) with at least 55% marks as per their respective field.
- UGC NET in Library Science Eligibility - Applicants should have a qualified Master of Library Science (M. Lib. Sc.) with at least 55% marks to be eligible.
- UGC NET Sociology Eligibility - Candidates should have a Master’s Degree in Sociology and must have qualified for it with at least 55% marks in aggregate.
- UGC NET Eligibility for Law - Candidates must have passed a Master of Law (LLM) with at least 55% marks in aggregate to be eligible for UGC NET examination.
- UGC NET Forensic Science Eligibility - Applicants must have a Master’s degree in Forensic Science and have passed it with 55% marks in aggregate.
- UGC NET in Commerce Eligibility - Applicants must have passed Master of Commerce (M.Com) with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate to be eligible for the Assistant Professor post for Commerce subject.
- UGC NET in Education Eligibility - Candidates should have passed a Master of Education (M.Ed.) with minimum aggregate marks of 55% to be eligible for the post.
- UGC NET in Yoga Eligibility - Applicants should have a Master’s Degree in Yoga and must have qualified for it with at least 55% marks in aggregate to be eligible for the Assistant Professor post for Yoga.
- UGC NET Mathematics Eligibility - Candidates who want to be selected as Assistant Professor for Mathematics subject should have a Master’s degree in Mathematics subject with at least 55% marks.
- UGC NET Population Studies Eligibility - Applicants should have a Master’s Degree in Population Studies and must have passed it with at least 55% marks in aggregate to be eligible for the Assistant Professor post for Population Studies subject.

UGC NET Number of Attempts
There is no limit on the number of attempts to appear for the UGC NET Exam. Candidates can appear for the exam as long as they fulfil the UGC NET Eligiibilty.
UGC NET Eligibility Exemption
The candidates applying for the Assistant Professor position or JRF are the only ones who can use the exemptions from the UGC NET eligibility requirements. These applicants may apply for work for the job of Assistant Professor at universities and colleges throughout India based on their SET results.
UGC NET Eligibility Exemption for Assistant Professor
The minimum eligibility requirement for the appointment of candidates as Assistant Professors in Universities, Colleges, and Institutes will remain NET/ SET/ SLET. However, the UGC regulations and amendments allow exemption from NET/ SET/ SLET exams under certain conditions. The following candidates are exempted from appearing for the UGC NET Exam if they want to get a job as an assistant professor.
- Candidates who have qualified for the States Eligibility Test (SET), which UGC 1st June 2002, are exempted from appearing in NET. They can also apply for Assistant Professor (anywhere in India).
- For SET held from 1st June 2002 onwards, the qualified candidates are eligible to apply for the post of Assistant Professor only in the universities/ colleges from where they have cleared their state exams.
- Candidates who have successfully cleared the UGC/ CSIR JRF examination before 1989 are exempted from appearing in NET.
