About the Indian National Anthem Code of Conduct

The Code of Conduct for the National Anthem of India are the rules which should be followed while playing or singing the National Anthem. These national anthem rules of India contain certain specific guidelines so that the correct version of the national anthem is recited on occasions by the observance of proper decorum. These code of conduct rules are revised and issued from time to time on the basis of fundamental duties enshrined in article 51(A) of the Indian Constitution.

Categories of People Who are Exempted From Standing Up

There are 10 categories of people which are exempted from standing up during recitation or singing of the national anthem. This exemption list is approved by the Supreme Court of India based on the physical disabilities and deformities of certain categories of Citizens. The list of exempted people with the following issues is given below:

  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Autism
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Dearing loss
  • Leprosy-cured persons
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Day blindness
  • Locomotive disability (wheelchair-bound)
  • Intellectual disability (learning disorder)

Events where the National Anthem Shall be Played

The National Anthem of India is played on several occasions through observing proper dignity and paying full respect. Some of the events where it shall be played are given below :

  • Civil and Military investiture such as award ceremonies for national bravery awards.
  • When National Salute i.e. the Command “Rashtriya Salute – Salami Shastr” to the accompaniment of the National Anthem is given on ceremonial occasions to the President or to the Governor/Lieutenant Governor within their respective States/ Union Territories.
  • On arrival of the President of India at formal State functions and other functions organized by the Government and mass functions and on his departure from such functions.
  • Immediately before and after the President addresses the Nation over All India Radio.
  • On arrival of the Governor/Lieutenant Governor at formal State functions within his State/Union Territory and on his departure from such functions.
  • When the National Flag is brought on parade.
  • When the Regimental Colours are presented to mark an event of any regiment.
  • For hoisting of colors in the Navy.
  • The day’s work may begin in all schools with a community singing of the National Anthem.
  • On any such occasion for which the Government of India has issued special directives.

Code of Conduct for Singing National Anthem of India

The National Anthem is the pride of a Country. It is the duty of every citizen of the country to hold and preserve this pride. There are some important things given below that one must keep in mind while reciting the National Anthem.

  • Whenever the National Anthem is sung or played, the audience shall stand in the attention position.
  • Do not indulge in any type of indiscriminate singing or playing of the Anthem.
  • When the National Anthem is performed as part of a newsreel or documentary, the audience is not required to stand up.
  • The full version of the anthem should be played in 52 seconds and a short version consisting of the first and last lines of the National Anthem should be played in about 20 seconds.
  • According to the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, “Any person who intentionally skips the singing of the national anthem or creates disturbances to any assembly engaged in such playing shall be penalized with imprisonment which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both.”

It was composed by Nobel Laureate Poet Rabindranath Tagore.
