The Indian Space Association (ISPA) was launched on 11th October 2021 through virtual mode. It acts as a single window system and an independent organisation of government and private space companies to deal with all the issues related to India’s space missions. It servs as the singular voice of the Private Space Industry, ISpA acts as a crucial link between the Government and private entities. It is dedicated to policy advocacy, engaging with and operating alongside all stakeholders. Acting as a catalyst, ISpA aims to accelerate the exchange of knowledge, information, and technology in space-related domains throughout the entire Indian Space ecosystem. This collaborative effort, including government agencies, aims to make India self-reliant, technologically advanced, and a prominent player in the Global Space arena.

This is a very important concept related to the UPSC IAS exams. It forms a significant portion of the General Studies Prelims syllabus and the General Studies Mains Paper 3 syllabus.

What is the Indian Space Association?

The Indian Space Association is an industry body of all the government and private sector satellite and space companies. It was formed as a step to expand and encourage the participation of the private sector in the space sector of India. It will play a pivotal role in the growth and development of the space industry in India by enabling collaborations between public and private sector space companies. Some of the leading national and international space players are a part of ISPA. They are equipped with the most advanced capabilities in the extra-territorial domains. It will work with every stakeholder to create a positive and enabling business environment and achieve the space objectives of the Government. 

The Indian Space Association will work with all market participants and assist the Government in formulating a national policy for commercial space exploration. The space industry body will also interact with other national space agencies and leading private space companies to attract high-tech technology and investments in the space sector. Functions of the Indian Space Association

  • The association shall work closely with IN-SPACe to take forward the goals and objectives of the Government in the space sector.

Here is a list of points that imply the importance of the Indian Space Association: 

  • It operates in an organised way to systematically bring private space companies and ISRO together for future space missions. 
  • Increased participation of the private sector will augment the infrastructure in this sector. As more money is pumped into this sector, it will also bring advanced technologies and equipment into the sector. 
  • The Indian Space Association’s launch shall create new pathways for the youth of India in public as well as private sectors. The space-based communications have come to the fore, and ISPA will bring more private companies into India’s space sector. 
  • The industry body will hear the views of all the stakeholders in India’s space exploration program and formulate a national policy on space exploration. 
  • It will encourage greater private sector participation in the space industry of India. Hence, the Government will move away from taking care of commercial decisions and focus on its role as a facilitator.

  • The Indian Space Association shall collaborate with big global houses, other Indian private sector companies, ISRO, and academia and focus single-handedly on achieving the goals of India’s space missions. 
  • Another critical significance of the Indian Space Association is that it will play a very important role in making the space sector of India Aatmanirbhaar self-reliant.

Major Pillars of Space Reforms

The four pillars of space reform are as follows: 

  • Government shall play the role of a facilitator in making India a powerhouse in commercial space explorations. 
  • Giving the private sector the freedom to innovate and come up with solutions to the most pressing challenges of the sector. 
  • Giving younger generations the proper guidance so that they are ready to take up the mantle and take forward the rich legacy of India in the space exploration arena. Keeping this in mind, the Government came up with the ATL Space Challenge in 2021. Under this, students of classes 6-12 need to come up with innovative solutions to the modern-day problems in the commercial space sector. 
  • Using the space sector as a resource for the progress of common citizens. The Government is using space technologies in several development projects like PM Fasal Bima Yojana, Soil Health Card, etc. Furthermore, the use of the NAVIC system for the fisherfolk community is also a commendable initiative by the Government in using space technologies for the welfare of the masses.

Significance of Satellite Internet in India

The importance of Satellite Internet in India includes the following:

Digital India

Greater penetration of internet connectivity is one of the major objectives of the Digital India Programme. Under the Digital India Abhiyaan, the Government aims to provide all services to the citizens through digital means from the comfort of their homes. The use of satellite-based Internet in Digital India has been a huge success as it has increased the efficiency of the schemes, eliminated leakages like corruption and also ensured timely access to services. 

Internet In Hilly Areas

The Government aims to connect all the far-flung hilly districts with high-speed broadband internet. The Government has also launched BharatNet, under which optical fibre cable capable of carrying high-speed internet connectivity shall be laid in all the villages, including those in the hilly areas. 

Satellite-Based Internet In Remote Areas 

India will only develop when its villages will see the fruits of development. Real economic growth and subsequent development can reach remote rural areas when it has an uninterrupted supply of Internet. The masses living in these areas will be able to access all government services from their houses, and they do not have to travel long distances to nearby towns to get their work done.
