Social Studies is one of the curricular areas in school education. It enables students to develop a critical understanding of society.

Important Points

Values related to social studies learning can broadly be grouped into three categories. Effective lesson plans must consciously take all three types into account. They are as follows:

• Behavioral values: These values are related to student's conduct in the classroom, for example, the right of students to be heard.
• Procedural values: These values are in consonance with the rational manner of the investigator, for example, respect for evidence, critical thinking, and willingness to participate.
• Substantive values: These values grow in individuals as a result of their family, ethnic, religious, or cultural experiences, for example, the attitude towards dowry, divorcee, etc. Teachers need to help students clarify these values through discussion and self-examination.

The following points characterize the nature of Social Studies :

• Social Studies are basically concerned with human relationships.
• Social Studies study mostly social issues and social issues are always more complex, more subjective, and less verifiable than the issues of physical sciences
• Different social Studies like history, economics, sociology, anthropology, etc. constitute an area or field of knowledge
• Social Studies  have their own/distinct content areas and methodologies for approaching and understanding knowledge
• Concern for value attainment is an important tenet of social studies. 
• Social Studies facilitate plurality in thinking in understanding an issue.
