If a : (b + c) = 1 : 3 and c : (a + b) = 5 : 7, find the value of b : (c + a).

a : (b + c) = 1 : 3 ---(1)

c : (a + b) = 5 : 7 ---(2)

Multiply by 3 in equation (1)

a : (b + c) = 3 : 9 ---(3)

From equation (2) and equation (3)

c = 5 and a = 3

a + b = 7

3 + b = 7

b = 7 – 3 = 4

Now,

b : (c + a)

⇒ 4 : (5 + 3)

⇒ 4 : 8

⇒ 1 : 2
