Snakes that belong to the genus Naja are commonly referred to as the "true" cobras. These serpents are known for their venomous bite and distinctive hood, which they display when threatened. All cobras are part of the Elapidae family, which is also home to other dangerously venomous snakes, such as the formidable King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah).
One of the most famous representatives of the Naja genus is the Indian Cobra, also known as Naja Naja. This snake's venom is neurotoxic, meaning it disrupts nerve signals and can cause muscle paralysis. Without treatment, a bite from an Indian Cobra can be fatal.
