The barbell strategy represents a method of balancing risk through asset combination: the very low-risk conservative investments should go along with highly speculative investments, which involve a lot of risks. In other words, through the application of the barbell strategy, moderate-risk investments are avoided at all costs in order to save the portfolio from rampant loss on one side, while letting the other side try and garner the sky-high returns. This is a new risk management strategy that has been promoted by famous economist and risk expert Nassim Nicholas Taleb, which has increased interest in its use not only for financial markets but also for any type of decision-making processes such as public policy and personal finance.

Concept of the Barbell Strategy

The core of the barbell strategy is hedging against uncertainty. The strategy consists of spreading the portfolio into two extremes: one is for secure, low-risk investments, such as government bonds or treasury bills, or other fixed-income assets that will hardly fluctuate in values. This type consists of highly speculative, high-risk investments such as stocks, commodities, or new startups with possibilities of high returns but on the flip side carrying possibilities of heavy losses.

The essence of the barbell strategy is that by holding a portion in safe assets, the riskiness of the investor gets capped at a significant downturn or even market crash. The speculative portion keeps opportunities open for higher gains; thus, caution and ambition are balanced. It excludes medium-risk assets vulnerable to market fluctuations and thereby deters the "middle ground" with both higher risk and returns being lesser-known.
