Grasshoppers, part of the suborder Caelifera and order Orthoptera , are among the oldest groups of insects known to exist. Fossil evidence suggests they date back to 250 million years ago.

Typically, grasshoppers are herbivores, feeding primarily on grass. Some species, however, are omnivores and consume animal tissue and faeces. These insects are often viewed as agricultural pests due to their tendency to form large swarms and devastate crops.

Various predators pose a threat to grasshoppers at every stage of their life-cycle. Beetles and flies prey on their eggs and larvae, while ants, spiders, and several mammals, including cats and dogs, prey on adult grasshoppers. They are also susceptible to parasites, such as the Grasshopper nematode ( Mermis nigrescens ).

To survive, grasshoppers have developed numerous adaptations to evade predators. Camouflage is a common tactic, allowing them to blend into their surroundings. Certain species, like those in the Proscopides family, can mimic sticks and twigs.

Some species employ aposematism, a form of adaptation where bright coloration signals that the insect is either poisonous or unpalatable to potential predators.
