ACT Format Overview 

The ACT contains five parts: English, Math, Reading, Science, and an additional test in Writing that is not mandatory. Every section is individually timed, with the entire exam taking 3 hours and 35 minutes with two brief pauses—a break between Math and one prior to Writing. ACT English

English contains 75 multiple-choice questions answered in 45 minutes. It relies on five passages containing 15 questions per passage, testing grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and rhetorical competence. The scoring is 1 to 36, with report categories in Production of Writing, Knowledge of Language, and Conventions of Standard English.

ACT Math

The Math section is 60 multiple-choice questions within 60 minutes, with subject matter such as Algebra, Geometry, Functions, Number & Quantity, and Statistics & Probability. ACT Reading

This section contains 40 multiple-choice questions within 35 minutes. This measures understanding through four passages in humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences as per ACT format. ACT Science

Science contains 40 questions within 35 minutes, measuring Interpretation of Data, Scientific Investigation, and Evaluation of Models & Experiments. The questions are graph, table, and scientific situation-based questions from biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science.

ACT Writing (Optional)

The Writing test is a 40-minute essay as per the ACT format. Students read a prompt with three views and are required to form their own argument and respond to at least one of the views. Essays are rated on a 1–6 scale in four areas: Ideas & Analysis, Development & Support, Organization, and Language Use & Conventions. Each section of the ACT adds up to a composite score (average of the four sections needed), but the Writing test is scored individually.

ACT Exam Pattern: Time Allocation 

The length and quantity of questions in each portion of the ACT varies. The parts are made to assess the abilities that are learned in secondary school and are crucial for success in higher education. There are 215 questions on the ACT overall, plus one optional essay. There are 75 questions in the English portion, 60 in the math section, and 40 in each of the reading and science areas.
