Despite narrowly missing out on a place in the IPL final after a close 6-run defeat to Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings have plenty to be proud of this season and Shashank Singh believes a lot of that credit goes to one man: Shreyas Iyer.
The ace middle-order batter, who had a breakthrough season himself, showered praise on Iyer’s captaincy, calling it the turning point for the team this year.
“No Better Captain in T20 Cricket Right Now”
Speaking openly about the impact Iyer has had on Punjab Kings’ campaign, Shashank echoed a sentiment shared by many: “There is no better captain than him in the current T20 world,” he said. “He gives us freedom, treats everyone equally, and makes even the youngsters feel at ease in the dressing room. He’s a chill bandaa.”
But it’s not just Iyer’s calm demeanor that impressed players – it’s his willingness to listen and adapt. “Shreyas is the only captain who says that if anyone has a suggestion during the game, they’re welcome to share it. If he thinks it’s good advice, he takes it on board. That’s rare.”

The Viral Scolding After Qualifier 2
One of the more talked-about moments of Punjab Kings’ campaign was a viral clip from Qualifier 2, where Iyer was seen scolding Shashank after he was run out during a crucial stage of the game against Mumbai Indians.
Shashank didn’t shy away from addressing the incident. In fact, he owned up to the mistake:
“I deserve it. Iyer should have slapped me. My father didn’t even speak to me till the finals,” he admitted with a smile. “I was casual. It looked like I was walking on the beach — not even in the garden! It was a crucial moment, and Shreyas was right to be disappointed. But later, he took me out for dinner. That’s the kind of leader he is.”
A Season to Remember for Shashank
Shashank ended the season as Punjab Kings’ second-highest run-getter, scoring 341 runs at a strike rate of 153. It was a significant leap forward for a player often considered under the radar.
“I didn’t want to be a one-season wonder,” he said. “I worked hard, and my preparation really helped. But honestly, I credit Ricky Ponting for changing my mindset and Shreyas for backing me since Day One.”
What’s Next? “Next Season Will Belong to Punjab Kings”
As the conversation wound down, Shashank made a confident prediction:
“Remember my words – next season will belong to Punjab Kings.”
With the strong leadership of Shreyas Iyer, a talented squad, and players like Shashank Singh stepping up, Punjab Kings may just be ready to turn that prophecy into reality.
